Reaction Quotient Calculator — Q

Q looks exactly like K — but it uses this-moment concentrations, not equilibrium ones. Compare Q to K: Q < K means the reaction shifts right toward products, Q > K shifts left, and Q = K means it is already at equilibrium.

Reaction Quotient Calculator — Q

Q=[products]p[reactants]rQ = \frac{[products]^p}{[reactants]^r}

How to interpret the result

Worked check: at some instant [NO₂] = 0.010 M, [N₂O₄] = 0.10 M → Q = 0.010²/0.10 = 0.0010. Against Kc = 0.0040, Q < K, so the mixture shifts right, making more NO₂ until Q reaches K.

Assumptions

  • Concentrations are instantaneous values, not equilibrium ones
  • Temperature is fixed (K is constant for the comparison)
