Chemistry lives in powers of ten — from Avogadro's number to rate constants. Multiply or divide two numbers in a×10^m form: coefficients combine normally while exponents add or subtract.

Scientific Notation Calculator

(a×10m)(b×10n)=ab×10m+n(a\times10^m)(b\times10^n) = ab\times10^{m+n}

How to interpret the result

Worked check: (2.5×10³) × (4.0×10²) → coefficient 10.0, exponent 5, i.e. 10.0×10⁵. Renormalize so the coefficient sits between 1 and 10: 1.0×10⁶. Division works the same way with subtracted exponents.

Assumptions

  • Inputs are in proper or unnormalized a×10^m form
  • Final renormalization to 1 ≤ coefficient < 10 is left to you
