Dilution Calculator — M₁V₁ = M₂V₂

Dilution conserves moles: the solute you pipette out is the solute you end up with, just in more solvent. Enter three of the four values — stock and final concentrations and volumes — to find the fourth.

How to interpret the result

Worked check: diluting 25.0 mL of 6.00 M HCl to 500 mL → M_2 = 6.00 × 25.0 / 500 = 0.300 M. Both volumes must share the same unit.

Assumptions

  • Only solvent is added — no reaction or evaporation
  • Volumes are additive enough for the purpose (standard lab assumption)
