Hand warmer crystallization

Objective: trigger crystallization in a supersaturated sodium acetate hand warmer, feel the heat released, and explain the energy change. You will activate the warmer, observe the crystal growth, measure the warming, and reset the pack for reuse.

Safety:

The activated warmer reaches about 50°C: hold it briefly, never press it against skin for long, and keep it away from small children. An adult must handle all boiling water used to reset the pack. Do not puncture the pouch. Adult supervision is required for minors.

Materials

  • Reusable sodium acetate hand warmer (store-bought)
  • Bowl
  • Thermometer or your hands
  • Pot of hot water (adult use only)

Procedure

1

Inspect the liquid pack

Hold the clear liquid hand warmer and note its temperature and appearance.

2

Trigger crystallization

Flex the small metal disk inside until you hear a click.

3

Watch and feel

Watch the white crystals race through the liquid and feel the pouch warming in your hands.

4

Measure the change

Compare the temperature before and after with a thermometer if you have one.

5

Reset the pack (adult)

To reuse, an adult boils the solidified pouch in water until it turns fully liquid again, then lets it cool.

What to observe

  • Flexing the disk triggers white crystals that spread through the pouch in seconds.

  • The pouch becomes noticeably warm within a minute.

  • The liquid fully converts to a solid crystalline mass.

  • Boiling the solid pouch in water returns it to a clear liquid.

Why it happens

The hand warmer holds a supersaturated solution of sodium acetate: more solid is dissolved than the water would normally hold at room temperature. It stays liquid only because crystallization needs a starting seed, which the metal disk provides when flexed. Once triggered, dissolved sodium acetate rapidly forms solid crystals, and forming those orderly crystal bonds releases energy as heat. This is an exothermic process: the system loses enthalpy and the surroundings gain it, which is why the pouch gets warm. Reheating the pouch in hot water redissolves the crystals and resets the supersaturated state, so the heat pack is reusable.

Try variations

  • Time how long the pack stays warm and graph the cooldown.

  • Trigger two packs at once and compare crystal growth patterns.

  • Test whether a cooled-but-untriggered pack can stay liquid for days.
