Electrolytic Cell

Definition

A device that uses electricity to force a non-spontaneous chemical reaction: like recharging a battery or electroplating jewelry.

Technical definition

An electrolytic cell is an electrochemical cell in which an external voltage drives a nonspontaneous redox reaction. Electrical energy converts to chemical energy, with the anode positive and the cathode negative.

Example

Electroplating a spoon: the spoon is the cathode, silver ions reduce onto it, and a power supply forces the nonspontaneous reaction.

Common confusion

Electrons still flow from anode to cathode through the external circuit in both cell types. What flips is which electrode is positive or negative and whether the reaction is spontaneous.
