Magnesium ion

Mg2+Mg^{2+}

Charge: 2+ · Type: Cation · Molar mass: 24.305 g/mol

Made of: magnesium

How it forms

Magnesium's two valence electrons are lost to give Mg2+ the electron configuration of neon. This ion is small for its charge, which makes it attract water molecules and other negative charges strongly.

Naming note

Mg2+ is called the magnesium ion. Like calcium, it needs no Roman numeral because magnesium forms only this one common ion.

Examples in compounds

  • Magnesium oxide

  • Magnesium sulfate

  • Magnesium hydroxide
