Liter (L)

Quantity: volume · Category: Volume

The liter is a unit of volume equal to one cubic decimeter. It is not an SI unit, but it is accepted for use with SI and is the standard volume unit in chemistry laboratories, where solution volumes, glassware capacities, and concentrations are all measured in liters and milliliters.

Relation to SI

1 L = 1 dm³ = 10⁻³ m³ = 1000 mL

Examples

  • Molarity is defined per liter of solution (mol/L)
  • A 1 L volumetric flask holds exactly 1000 mL
  • The old molar volume at STP (0 °C, 1 atm) ≈ 22.4 L/mol
